How to choose a WMS for an operation with customs and an ERP

Ten criteria for the buying committee: coexistence with the ERP, scope, timelines and piece-level evidence. SAP and Oracle stay; Geodot adds the logistics layer.

Overhead still life: a navy ring binder, clipped documents, a handheld scanner and a carton closed with a security seal.

The committee evaluating a WMS usually asks three things. Whether it coexists with the ERP, how long it takes and who decides. This guide summarizes ten criteria used on the compare page.

1. Time to go live

Ask for a phased plan with the first live operation in about 90 days. Compare that commitment with the vendor's written plan.

2. Platform scope

Decide whether you need warehouse only, or also transport, routing, palletizing and a control tower. Incomplete scope is paid later in extra integrations.

3. Routing and palletizing

Ask whether the route is built knowing what fits in each truck. When the two calculations run apart, the truck leaves with a safety margin.

4. Relationship with the ERP

SAP, SAP Business One and Oracle stay as the system of record. Geodot connects by API, files or connector, depending on what your ERP exposes. It does not replace it.

5. Automated distribution centers

If your site depends on heavy robotics, evaluate the vendor's warehouse execution depth. Geodot runs conventional racking; automation is reviewed case by case.

6. Visibility on the road and at destination

Confirm whether tracking and unload validation come in the same platform. Adding another GPS vendor extends the project.

7. How it improves over time

Ask who changes the rules after go-live. If every adjustment needs an external consultant, operating cost grows with the months.

8. LATAM operating rules

Load margin, returnables and FEFO should exist as product rules. In a customs operation, add matching against the manifest and piece-level evidence.

9. Ecosystem and scale

If headquarters imposes a global standard, the vendor's ecosystem weighs more. If the operation is regional, prioritize fit to your floor.

10. Tax localization

Invoicing and tax documents stay in your ERP. The WMS runs logistics on that record without replacing the tax layer.

Integrations to request in writing

Geodot connects with SAP Business One, SAP S/4HANA, SAP TM/EWM, Oracle, Oracle OTM and BASIS Release 53. BASIS is in production with returnables and load margin.

SAP Business One includes virtual warehouses and position management. Connector detail is on Integrations.
